The bonfire is an integral part of this festivity in many states. In Assam, Bihu celebrations include the early morning worship of Agni, the god of fire. In Andhra, Bhogi is synonymous with the early morning Bhogi bonfire. In Tamil Nadu, a bonfire wherein old stuff and rubbish is burnt is an important aspect of the festivities. While In Punjab, the most enjoyable ritual of Lohri is the gathering around the sacred bonfire in the evening. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, sesame (til) sweets is exchanged with the words: “til gul guhya, god god bola” (take these til sweets and speak good words). There are also the famed kite flying festivities, especially in Gujarat.
Makar Sankranti is a celebration with social festivities such as colorful decorations, rural children going house to house, singing and asking for treats (or pocket money), melas (fairs), dances, kite flying, bonfires and feasts. The Magha Mela mentioned in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, thus placing this festival to be around 2,000 years old. Many go to sacred rivers or lakes and bathe with thanksgiving to the sun.

The Folklore

According to folklore, any boy or girl who takes a bath at any of the holy places will be blessed with a charming and beautiful partner. Another belief associated with the holy dip is that Lord Vishnu himself comes down to take a dip in the Triveni Sangam and therefore anyone who bathes there is blessed with his grace. Thus, though the exact origins may be unknown but people in different parts of the country celebrate this wonderful festival with a lot of gusto believing in a legend that has the highest meaning and significance to them.
